1 [Band-in-a-Box] Re: Audiophile version

Hi Ron,

I have used the audiophile version on an external hard drive ever since it came out. I had the same thought as you are exploring, in that I wanted to take BB with me on a trip and use my laptop instead of the desktop. That has never worked out well unless one has access to power.

The first drives were 2.5" SATA USB but you could not get enough power to them direct from the laptop. I had to use a separate USB hub connected to the power. That kinda defeated the purpose really but at least you could get them in your briefcase.

Maybe you could find a USB external drive that does not need quite so much power? I am not sure it is still the case, but you used to be able to get the audiophile version on disks.

I have a collection of the huge heavy Hornettek external drives supplied by PG with the audiophile version and I am not quite sure what to do with them. The power requirement for us Aussies is even more of a problem because they have Canadian/American plugs and require an adaptor. In addition, they are extremely noisy! It seems that the built-in fans somehow become misaligned after about three months of constant use. It has happened with every model that I recieved - four in total. Maybe I should try taking them apart and seeing if the fan can be fixed? I did read on the PG Forum that this could be done.

Perhaps we should ask PG Music to see if they can come up with a better external hard drive. The current one is not quite so huge but it still has this same noise problem. I think I might have a look around to see what else is available.

This does not solve your problem, I know, but will give you some other things to consider.

As far as storage space is concerned, after taking all the upgrades to BB, RealTracks and RealBand, my present hard drive has 366GB free of the original 465GB. You should be aware that I do not keep my song files on the external hard drive. They are all on my computer hard drive.

Best,

Grah
