I'm sure you'll get several recommendations regarding DAW software. I use
Sonar X1 Producer and have been using Sonar (or Cakewalk) for over 20 years
now. The software's capabilities have grown hugely since the first version
of Cakewalk that I used. One of the things I like about Cakewalk products is
that they have continued to support MIDI and expand Sonar's MIDI
capabilities while having the software's audio capabilities grow to rival or
match those of the other most popular DAW's.
I have produced hundreds of tracks using Sonar, and have become comfortable
with its capabilities, as well as its limitations (of which, at this point,
there are very few.) Once you purchase a DAW that's in, say, the top five,
it becomes more an issue of you working with the software and getting out of
it what there is. For most people, whether its Sonar, ProTools, Logic, or
several others, you won't really touch all of the capabilities of any of
them. Kind of like people who use Word, Excel, etc. There are many, many
things that the software can do that you probably won't need or particularly
want, but they are there if you need them.
I do agree with you that using a good computer-based DAW is much easier than
using a standalone unit. Just make sure you get as much computer as you can,
in terms of processor speed, RAM, disk space, etc. as the software will
continue to evolve to use every bit of what you might now have, and more
eventually.
Good luck, and hope this helps.
