There are many ways to skin a cat.

Unless you are interested in sophisticated midi capabilities for composition, IMO you cannot go wrong with Reaper from Cockos Software. It is a free, uncrippled, untimelimited download that you pay for on the honor system. There is no difference between the demo and the 'full version.'

It is also cross platform compatible.

If you want top midi functionality  then probably most would agree that the top 3 DAWs for that purpose are Cubase, Logic and Sonar. Cubase has one major advantage: it is the only one of these that is fully cross platform in case anytime in the future you change from Mac to PC or vice versa.

Go to Musicradar.com and search for 'top DAWS' for a brief article ranking and explaining the advantages and disadvantages of various DAWs.

I really like Reaper and really love Cubase.
