One thing I do, and I do this every last Sunday of the month, is to have Review Sunday. I bring treats for the kids, but they have to earn them.
I take little images (usually something relating to the month - this month, I'm using flowers), about 2x2, and post them on the board. These images represent the songs. In order for them to earn the treats (which each month is different) is to get all the images off the board. I have one image represent each verse in a song. The kids have to sing it nice and loud and if they do, I remove the image.
So, here's a breakdown:
If I Listen with My Heart has three verses - so I put four images up on the board for that song. When they sing the first verse well, I remove one image; then the second; then the third; then they have to sing the entire song. As their singing, if I don't hear them well enough, I'll cup my hand to my ear and they start singing louder.
I Will Follow God's Plan only has one verse, so I put one image up there. They have to sing the entire song well for me to take it down.
Stand for the Right only has one image, and they usually get this one pretty quick.
Our April song is I'm Trying to be Like Jesus which has two verses, so they have to sing each verse and then all the way through.
Then Praise to the Man, will have one image. We only learned the first verse this month. We're going to work on the third verse next month. Once they sing that all the way through, then they'll earn the treat.
I know this may sound monotonous, but it really does work. All during the review, I'll tease them about not singing loud enough, or not seeing them sing. I'll say "I guess the teachers will enjoy the treats today." This really gets them going and they start singing with gusto and they love it.
I know this may not work in larger Primaries, but it really does work in mine. And my kids know that the last Sunday is Review Sunday.
