Larry,
Changing the patch from one instrument to another will alter the tonal
quality and emulate the specific characteristics of that instrument -- it
does not affect the underlying MIDI notes at all. You could change the patch
to drums if you wanted to hear it that way.
If you want to change what you see on the screen you need to actually
transpose the music.
