I so agree with your statement of being sad if they took Nursery away from
you. I feel the same way. I keep ours simple. We sing 7 songs. I do
change what we sing every week, but pretty much stick with the same 24 songs
or so. I am in there for 15 minutes. Most of that time is spent laughing
with the kids. They are so incredibly adorable, and I love them. It is
also a good transition into Primary, I think. When the new Sunbeams came
into Primary this year, they were excited because they saw me, and had a
familiar face to smile at them! One little girl didn't want to go into
Primary, until she saw me, and I waved at her, and she came running in. I
would NEVER give up Nursery. In fact we talked about the possibility of
having someone else do it, and I flat out told them that I didn't want that
to happen.
I also sing only church songs with them. I think that there are enough
great, simple songs for the little ones to sing, that we don't need to add
"Old McDonald" or the like. I make sure that I have a plan for the entire
singing time with them, and print it off with my monthly plan for Primary.
We sing 7 songs, ending with I am a Child of God. On the last Sunday of
every month, we do Wiggle Worms (found in the group files). They love the
fact that they can pick their own songs. I let them hold the worms all
through singing time too.
That is my 2 cents.

Our ward also has two nurseries. I cover one nursery and the primary
pianist for the week (we have two brothers who switch back and forth) covers
the other one. We go to the nurseries during Junior primary sharing time,
so we have up to 15 minutes with them.
We have put together 2 nursery bags that we take with us. Each bag has
props for the songs that we sing and a list of 15-20 songs that the children
know. We gathered what we found in the primary closet (it hadn't been
cleaned out in a while and we found a lot of stuff to use: puppets, shakers,
Old MacDonald pictures, etc.). One of the counselors made a few other props
(laminated pictures of Jesus for "Jesus Once Was a Little Child", etc.). We
don't sing all the songs each week. I honestly do very little prep for
nursery - just think about what songs I want to do. I tend to do active
songs first and end with more reverent songs. We always end with the same
song, but I just rotate through the others. That's just how I work...
Also, on 5th Sundays or on weeks that I am out of town, the Primary
Presidency covers nursery for me and the pianist. Since our prep is so
minimal and the bags are ready to go each week, it isn't difficult for them
to step in.
I find that I am kept busy on Sunday (I am also the ward organist), but
nursery actually adds very little stress to my routine. As long as I am
prepared for singing times (which I should be anyway), I love the time I
spend in nursery. I would be very sad if they took that away from me!
