I use leaves & the snow (Strofoam peanuts) the same way.

I came up with an idea this afternoon with my 10 year old son. I have a bunch of silk autumn leaves. They are individual, not on a stem or anything, no wires or plastic, just the silk. They scatter around great and look reasonably real, but no mess. I think they were less than a dollar for the whole bag (about 100 leaves). I think paper leaves if they were curled up a little would work just as well.
We put a 2 foot by 4 foot rectangle on the carpet with masking tape.
Then a line down the middle with a small circle in the center (sort of like a basketball court). The idea is that you have two players
competing against each other, each with a balloon pump to blow leaves
into the other persons court. I think blow dryers would work, I just
happen to have two balloon pumps.
To begin, put all the leaves inside the small circle in the center,
then we will say "ready, set, go!" and begin a countdown: 10... 9...
8... 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1! (all of the children helping countdown).
Each person will pump as fast as they can to get the leaves onto the
other persons side. Leaves were going everywhere, first going over,
but then blowing right back. It was pretty funny!
At the end of the countdown whoever has the fewer number of leaves
inside their half of the box determines what song we sing. I will have two songs already picked, one for each side. This way nobody really loses. The song that isn't sung will stay on the court, so I will only add one song each time we play. The countdown keeps the game time short.
Anyway, it's just a silly attention getter. I think it will work. My son and daughter decided we needed to start a new Thanksgiving
tradition and play this game. Maybe we'll have a tournament! That
would be fun. We could make it double elimination, and a pumpkin pie
for the winner! Complete with a big wall chart. Funny!

(I've separated about 300 leaves from the Dollar Tree into baggies & put 1 numbered leaf in each, then stand on a chair & sprinkle about 30 leaves over the head of each child).
Here is another leaf post that I saved, sorry I don't know who wrote it:
"I played this last year with my Primary kids and they had fun with it. I bought some silk leaves from Oriental Trading or you can make your own out of colored paper. Tape numbers 1-11 on some of the leaves.(Not every leaf needs a number). I then threw the leaves around the room or you could use a fan and have it blow the leaves. Make sure each child gets a leaf. Then call out the numbers and the child with the corresponding leaf gets to answer the question or the whole Primary sings the song if it is a song. (You could have different ways to sing the songs and let the child with the numbered leaf choose a way to sing it or something along those lines). These are the questions and songs I used. When we sang "It's Autumntime" I had the kids stand when we sang their leaf color. These were songs we had learned last year along with some Fall songs so you could certainly change the songs you use. The kids just liked catching the leaves and using them with the songs.

Here is another post I've tried 2 times, but haven't mastered this like I pictured it in my mind, if anyone else has been successful I'd like to know how, but we still have fun with it:
"Week Three.
I made a leaf blowing box. It had a hole in the side for me to insert the wind (hairdryer on cool setting) and a hole in the back for the children to My box is 2 feet tall and 1 foot x 1 foot square. I cut 4 rectangular holes in the front to look like a 4 pane window and then attached a piece of heavy plastic (part of a plastic bag that a bedspread came in)to the inside. The children seated could see the leaves blowing around,but the child trying to catch the leaf was on the back side of the box where I cut a 4 inch diameter hole for them to stick their hand in. For the blow dryer, I used the "High" setting, but my blowdryer also has a "cool" setting. So it was cool air on high speed, so I didn't have a problem with heat. I would tip the blowdryer from side to side, sometimes in circluar motion to get the leaves to fly. The box was not airtight, so I didn't have a problem with air pressure in the box.
I had to try a few different things for the leaves until I found what
worked. Real leaves were too heavy. Cardstock leaves were too heavy.
Plain construction paper worked the best. In the winter time I put
packing peanuts inside and called them snowflakes. They are very light
so it looked like a blizzard! Lots of possibilities. stick their hand in to try and "catch a song"
It's Autumn time was one of the songs on the leaves inside the box.
They really enjoyed the leaf box."

Most of the glittery & other streamers were snatched right up by the kids from the poppers & just a little mess was left anyhow.
