I can empathize with you. Last week Sr. Primary was quite the challenge for me. During opening exercises I have the children stand and we sing an article of faith. There was an entire row of 10 year old girls (about 8 of them) who refused to stand let along sing, even though their teacher was encouraging them to do so. Then later on during the closing song I had to stop right in the middle of the song and remind the entire primary that the closing song is to help us prepare for the closing prayer and invite the spirit. Instead of singing, there were children walking around, talking, bugging their neighbor and just being very irreverent. I felt horrible afterwards, like I was a mean lady giving a lecture.
We have a very large Sr. Primary with upwards to 60 children and sometimes I feel like no matter what I do they won't sing. To be fair, my cute 7-8 year olds do sing and try hard to participate, but the older kids, boys and girls, will often refuse to participate. I want the children to enjoy primary and learn to feel the spirit, but I cannot not seem to make them understand that they have to do their part and that the example of the older children definitely has an impact on the younger children. It is very frustrating and I'm trying hard not to resent those children who week after week refuse to participate and are now causing others to do the same.
