One of my favorite summer songs to sing with the children is “Oh, What Do You Do in the Summertime.” I bring in lots of props and use lots of actions for this one – I even sing it with the nursery children and they love it.
First verse –
Oh, what do you do in the summertime, when all the world is green – hands palms up, shrug shoulders (to indicate a question)
Do you fish in a stream – I have a children’s toy fishing pole that one of the children gets to come up and use to pretend to fish; the rest of us use our hands and pretend to cast out and reel in a fish
Or lazily dream on the banks as the clouds roll by – I use a green towel for the “banks” and have a child sit (or lay –some of them insist on laying down to “dream”) and pretend to be dreaming while another child floats a white posterboard over their head; the rest of us pretend to be asleep with our hands tucked up to our chins/cheeks then use wave our hands gentle overhead for the “clouds”
Is that what you do? – Point outward to each other
So do I! – Point to ourselves
Second verse –
Oh, what do you do in the summertime, when all the world is green – same action as first verse
Do you swim in a pool, to keep yourself cool – I have one child wear a pair of floaties and goggles and pretend to swim; the rest of us pretend to swim
Or swing in a tree up high? – One child stretches as tall as they can and raises their arms, pretending to be a tree – the rest of us do the same, or swing our arms back and forth to “swing”
Is that what you do? So do I – same actions as first verse
Third verse –
Oh, what do you do in the summertime, when all the world is green – same action as first verse
Do you march in parades – Pretend to march. I want to get a fun hat and a baton so that the child who is helping can wear the hat and use the baton and be the “drum major”
Or drink lemonades – I bring either a lemonade juice box or just a large cup with a straw and the child pretends to drink it; the rest of us pretend like we’re drinking from a cup
Or count all the stars in the sky – I have a wand with a glittery star on top so the child at the front raises that up high, the rest us of look up and point at the ceiling and “count the stars”
Is that what you do? So do I – same actions as first verse
I bring up all of the “helpers” for all three verses and get them all ready and lined up at the front of the room at the same time and then we sing through all three verses. The kids love this song and they love it when I bring out the props for this one. Even the nursery kids love it!
