BIAB started out as a midi-generating program, with the output run
through a computer's soundcard midi-synth or to an external midi module
or keyboard through a midi interface. As the program has evolved
PGMusic began incorporating audio samples with what they call "real
drums." They got live musicians to play drum licks that they looped and
figured out how to incorporate with their midi styles, replacing the
midi drums. Gradually they did the same with other instruments, so that
now there are styles which use only "real instruments" and no midi
sounds at all.

You can buy the complete BIAB which comes with all the "real
instruments" and their styles as well as all the original midi styles,
or you can buy a less expensive version which has all the midi styles
but only a few of the "real instrument" sounds. If you're not going to
be using the "real instruments" there's no need to spend the extra
money. If you don't have midi gear to use, then buying the full version
which has all the "real instruments" included might be the best thing to
do. That sounds like that is what you need to do since you don't have
any other equipment to get the sounds from. Buying the full version
(but not the uber-expensive "audiophile" version) is what you should
probably do. That way you'll have all the sounds for your music making.

You should investigate Bob Norton's "expanded styles" which are midi
styles but they allow you to end up effectively with 8 chords in each
measure. If you install the Coyote ForteDXi soft synth which comes with
BIAB, you have an alternative sound source which you can run the output
from the midi styles such as Bob's "expanded styles" (as well as all of
PGMusic's midi styles) and you'll have a terrific music-making computer.

I hope this further clarifies things for you.
