For production, I also use a DAW and heavily modify the midi data
created by BIAB. The DAW is not limited to General Midi or even limited
to soundfonts so timbre is almost unlimited.

When I am using BIAB, my default synth is TTS-1 from Cakewalk. It is a
DXi plugin with a more than full complement of built-in GM sounds. In
addition, the TTS-1 has an edit feature that allows tweaking the sounds
for individual taste. It is fully compatible with BIAB although
originally delivered by Cakewalk through their Music Creator and Sonar
