0 RE: [primusic] Program songs reveiw-need ideas

Last year I promised them an ice cream sundaes if they “passed off” each song.  Out of construction paper, I cut out each item that makes up an ice cream sundae.  I had a bowl, 3 scoops of ice cream in 3 different flavors, banana, whipped topping, cherries, spoon, sprinkles, and chocolate syrup (just make an item for each song you need them to know).  I laminated each item, put a magnet on the back, and wrote a program song on the back of each.  I also made a grading chart with all the songs listed and a column to write the grade (laminated). I explained to the kids that I would give them each an ice cream sundae but we would have to “earn” each ingredient.   The sundaes I served after our program practice on the Saturday before our program; it was a great incentive to get the kids to come to the practice!

On Sunday, I put the pieces for the sundae on the chalk board and explained in order to earn each item, they had to pass the song off with an “A.”  This is how my grading scale went:  A – Awesome, B – Basically know it, C – Can only sing half the song, D – Don’t know it, F – Failed.    So a child would come pick out an item for the sundae, we would sing the song written on the back, and then I would ask an adult in the room to grade the song.  I would write the grade on the grading chart with a dry erase mark so I could rewrite the grade later  when their scores improved.  If the song needed work, then we would review it then or it would give me a gauge to know which songs to focus on in coming weeks.  If they passed with an A the first time (meaning the song is program-ready), then they earned that item and we wouldn’t focus on that song very much while preparing for the program since they know it.   As they earn each item, I put these sundae items together to show them what they have earned so far.  This gets them excited to see it come together, especially in the beginning when maybe they only have earned 2-3 items.  I would really play it up and tell them things like, “We really need to earn that bowl, or I am going to have to serve you the ice cream in your hand!”  or “Who likes chocolate ice cream??  Me too!!  Let’s work really hard to get this one!!”

It was a great motivator for the kiddos and they all thought it was so fun!!  It was great for me because it helped me gauge which songs they knew and which ones to work on more.  It also helped because I would use this basically every week for the 5-6 weeks prior to the program.  I would just plan a few other small ways to repeat the songs that needed to be worked on but kept games and silly singing to a minimum to make sure they knew the songs correctly!!

Hope this helps!

Subject: [primusic] Program songs reveiw-need ideas

Since there are so many creative people here I am hoping to get some ideas to help with reviewing program songs.

I would like to make some type of poster which lists all the songs and the kids will get excited about completing before the program. I have found some really cute ideas on some blogs that are general review along with a package with colored ribbons so I may try to include that but I would really like to do something that ties into the theme of "I Know the Scriptures are True". If someone has an idea I would love to hear it. If not I will see what inspiration I can get the next few days and share it with all of you.

Thanks in advance. I LOVE the ideas I get from this group and hope I can return the favor soon.

Pam
