0 [primusic] Re: Ways to encourage singing in program

I did something that worked VERY well in getting my children singing the
best they've ever done for the primary program itself. At the Friday
practice, I had cards with numbers 1, 2 or 3 on them. I told the children
if they were goofing around and not paying attention when we were
singing, I would hold up a 1. (I never did have to use it). If they
weren't watching me, or not singing at their best, I would hold up the
number 2. If they were being their usual amazing singers, I would hold up
the 3. Then, I told them at the program, that I would take the numbers
they scored and put them in a jar and when we got to primary afterwards,
there would be a surprise based on how many "points" they scored during
the program.

It was AMAZING how the children watched me more closely, and any time
they dropped down into the 2 area for a moment, they would quickly pick
back up and sing it beautifully. My children easily got 3's on
everything. When we went to primary, I did the treasure hunt idea someone
else posted, except we did all the action songs for junior primary and I
let my senior primary pick all the songs they did. I was not really
surprised that they picked many of the songs we did in the program.
They've come to love that beautiful music, and I'm so thankful for that!

Anyway, I had a treasure with candy (I don't do this often) and while I
emphasized that they taught their parents that day about the plan of
happiness and that there is no greater treasure in the world than that.
Then, because the children earned 3s on each of the songs, they were able
to have 3 treats.

I thank the sister who created the treasure hunt idea. We were able to
have a relaxing primary even though they released our primary presidency
just before we did the program, so it was a pretty emotional, yet
spiritual experience for our children. I am so thankful to have the
opportunity to work with those precious, beautiful children. And I am
also thankful for you wonderful people who share your ideas so readily.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Sincerely,

Wendy Norman
