Today was the first day that we worked on PTTM, because of Mother’s Day. It went well with both groups. I used much of Camille’s ideas from her blog. I did go over the history of the song a bit more, however. I also went over the meaning of the first verse. When we got to decoding “Blessed to open the last dispensation” I asked one of the Jr. Primary kids what it meant. He was being a bit disruptive, so I tried to draw him in. I asked him what he thought it meant. He said “To open a door”, I loved that! Then I asked what it meant to “open the last dispensation” to anyone in general, and he said “Open the door to Heavenly Father!” From the mouths of babes! How perfect was that? Because of Joseph Smith, the “door” to Heavenly Father was opened!!!
I also concentrated on the history of this song, and how it related to Joseph Smith. Next week we will work on making the song fun. But one of the things I read about the song was that it originally was to be sung to a song from “The Southern Hymnbook” (I think that is what it is called). It was called “Star in the East”, and is about Jesus’ birth. It is a very simple song. My chorister is trying to work out so that we sing both versions of the song. We are thinking of singing the first verse as W.W. Phelps originally wanted it sung to “Star in the East”, and then doing some sort of interlude and going into the “Scotland the Brave” version. The music I found for “Star in the East” did not have accompaniment, so she is working on doing that. But I am thinking of doing it simply. I am excited! I always like to mix up one song, and this is it for the year, I think! If anyone is interested in the “Star in the East” sheet music, just do a google search for it. It was very easy to find. I think the version I found was called “Bright and Beautiful”
