I switch the 3rd & 4th verse order so I can tell the story chronologically. I tell about Abinadi and how he went to teach of repentance and was killed. . . . but one person heard him. . . (Alma). I tell a little about Alma and that Alma had a son (Tell Alma the younger's story and inlude that he had friends who repented like him - The Sons of Mosiah - One of the Sons of Mosiah was Ammon. . . .sing Ammon's verse. etc etc.
I'll just post the whole text of what I used. Then, each week I just draw the flow chart on the board of how all of these people are connected and we sing through the story. I emphasize that even though Abinadi was killed look at all that came to pass because of his righteousness.
"I would like to tell you a true story about a man named Abinadi. He was a prophet who preached repentance to a wicked people and a wicked king. He preached boldly and courageously. King Noah angrily ordered his priests to kill Abinadi. He said, âAway with this fellow, and slay himâ
But when the priests tried to lay their hands on Abinadi, he withstood them, saying: âTouch me not, for God shall smite you if ye lay your hands upon me, for I have not delivered the message which the Lord sent me to deliver. ⦠I must fulfil the commandments wherewith God has commanded me.â
The people of King Noah were afraid to touch Abinadi because the Spirit of the Lord was with him. Abinadi declared that he would finish the message that God had sent him to deliverâ"and then it wouldnât matter what King Noah and the people did to him.
When Abinadi concluded his message, King Noah demanded that he deny the words he had spokenâ"or he would be put to death. But Abinadi refused.
Because Abinadi would not deny the words he had spoken, the wicked King Noah had him put to death. Abinadi was very brave and righteous. He courageously obeyed the Lordâs commandmentsâ"even though it cost him his life!
Alma was one of the priests of King Noah. He believed heard the words Abinadi spoke and believed them. He left King Noah to go and teach the gospel. He had a son who he named Alma. He was called Alma the Younger. Alma, the younger did not believe in Heavenly Father. Many times he had heard his father, Alma, urge the people to love God and keep the commandments. But he would not really listen, for he did not want to go to church and worship God.
Alma, the younger led many people away from the Church. He had four friends, the sons of Mosiah, who felt as he did. With Alma as their leader, they found excitement in doing wrong.
The Lord loved Alma and his friends, but he did not like the things they were doing. One day the Lord, sent an angel to them. The angel descended as it were in a cloud, and he spoke with a voice of thunder, which caused the earth where they stood to shake. And they were so surprised that they fell to the earth and could not understand what was said to them. The angel called again, âAlma, stand up and listen! Why do you persecute the church of God?â
Alma could say nothing. The angel continued: âThe Lord has heard the prayers of his people and also the prayers of your father, Alma, who has asked with much faith that you might see the truth. For this purpose, I have come to convince you of the power and authority of God, that the prayers of his servants might be answered according to their faith. Now, how can you dispute the power of God? I am sent from him to tell you to change your ways and seek to destroy the church no more.â
Alma and the others with him fell again to the earth, and Almaâs astonishment was so great that he could not open his mouth or speak. He became so weak that he could not even move his hands. His friends lifted him up and carried him to his home. There they laid him before his father and told all that had happened to them. The father rejoiced, for he knew that all that had happened was because of the power of God.
After two days and two nights Alma stood up and began to speak. He repented of his sins, and from this time on Alma and the four sons of Mosiah became missionaries. They brought many to the knowledge of the truth and declared to all the people that the Lord does truly reign.
Ammon was one of the sons of Mosiah. After the angel talked to him, Ammon went on a mission to the Lamanites. He knew that if the Lamanites learned about Jesus, they would stop fighting the Nephites and they could all be friends.
Ammon went to the king of the Lamanites. He asked to be the king's servant because he wanted to help him. The king said that Ammon could help tend the king's sheep. While Ammon was tending the sheep, some mean men came and tried to steal the sheep.
Ammon protected the king's other servants and saved the sheep. The king was very happy. He asked Ammon why he was so strong and good. Then Ammon taught the king and his people about Jesus. Many of the Lamanites believed Ammon's teachings and wanted to follow Jesus and be friends with the Nephites. Because they believed the teachings of Ammon, they were called the Ammonites. They learned that they should share and not fight anymore.
The Ammonites buried their swords and bows in the ground and promised to never fight again. They moved to the land of the Nephites and lived in peace for many years.
Army of Helaman
Some of the Lamanites had not believed Ammon's teachings. They still wanted to fight the Nephites. The Nephites needed more help to fight the Lamanites, but the Ammonites could not fight because they had buried their weapons and PROMISED never to fight again.
Their grown-up boys were only babies when their parents had promised not to fight. So these young men had not made that promise. They said they would help.
They asked the prophet, Helaman (son of Alma the Younger), to be their leader. They were not afraid to fight even though they were young. Even though these armies of Helaman had never fought in battle before, they were not afraid. Their Ammonite mothers had taught them that they would be protected if they had faith in God and obeyed His commandments.
The young men obeyed Helamanâs commands and fought bravely. Finally they won the battle. The battle had been fierce, and many soldiers were killed. However, although all of them had been wounded, not one of the two thousand young men in Helamanâs command had been killed. Helaman said that they had been protected by the power of God because of their marvelous faith in Him.
The Lamanites began to obey God's commandments. They became more righteous than the Nephites. Samuel was a Lamanite prophet. He went to the Nephites and told them to repent. Many of the Nephites were angry and told Samuel to leave or they would kill him. He started to go back to his own land, but the Lord told him he had to go back to Zarahemla and tell the people again.
The people would not let him back into the city, so Samuel climbed up on the city wall and talked to the people loudly from the wall. He told them that Jesus was going to be born in just 5 more years. He said that, when Jesus was born, a new star would appear in the sky and there would be a day and a night and a day when it wouldn't get dark.
Some of the people believed him and were very happy that Jesus would soon be born.
But some of the people were angry with Samuel and threw rocks and shot arrows at him. Heavenly Father protected Samuel so that their arrows could not hit him.
After Jesus was crucified, he came and appeared to the people in the Promised Land. It made the people very happy. He taught the people his gospel. He loved the little children and blessed them one by one. And angels came and also blessed the children. Everyone was happy and promised to be kind and to love and help each other."
