I think it just comes with training them. Have a singing time where you play a game of sorts with them having to watch you. Warn the pianist ahead of time that you will be going fast, slow, holding notes, etc. You could introduce it by discussing what a fermata is (is that the word) Then really exaggerate and have fun with it. Then explain they MUST follow that closely all the time but ESP in the program. I have been lucky because most of my kids have a wonderful music program at school and for years have been trained to never take their eyes off the music leader. So it carries over to primary which makes things easy for me. But that should help in getting them to watch you.
As for standing... I raise 3 fingers at the beginning of each song. They know it means to 1- sit on the edge of their seat, 2 - put feet on the floor... (sometimes hard for the little ones sitting in the choir seat but older ones can) 3 - Look at my face so I know they are ready.
It really works well. I don't stand them till they are all looking at me..... well most of them. Waiting for the Sunbeams could take a while.
Good luck. Even if they don't watch you things will be OK. The Spirit takes over and it doesn't matter what happens it turns out beautifully.

Hi! I am a new Primary Chorister in my ward and our presentation is in 2 weeks. Luckily, the kids know most of the songs already, but at our rehearsal last week they really struggled with watching me when I stand them up and sit them down. I know we can't expect perfection but was wondering if anyone has any good ideas for getting them to watch you during the songs for the program!
