A la Bill Clinton and "it depends what 'is' means," I have never restricted the meaning of 'portable' to bus powered.
 
Maybe that is why you've heard the audiophile is portable: some consider an external drive to be portable, whether bus powered or not ... just as the reality of a battery powered laptop is such that you generally have to plug it into the mains for any serious use of more than an hour or two.
