I have really appreciated this message group while I have had this calling. I had this calling several years ago before I had kids of my own and generally went home crying every Sunday because it was that hard of a calling for me, in large part because I had no ideas of how to add variation to the teaching so the kids would stay interested. This time around, it has been completely different, in large part to the great ideas on this group. I haven't contributed at all, but now that I am going to be finishing the calling after our program, I wanted to share one idea that I had on my own that the kids enjoyed.
"Heads Up Seven Up" was one of my favorite games in elementary school. We played a modified version last week to help review a few of the songs that we needed extra help with before our program. Here are the rules:
Choose 7 people to go to the front of the room. Chorister says "Heads Down" and everyone except the people at front puts their heads down, closes their eyes, and extends one thumb (on top of head so it's easy for someone to walk down the rows). Chorister chooses one person from the front as "It." That person goes out and touches the thumb of one person who is sitting reverently with eyes closed. That person puts his or her thumb down and stays seated with EYES CLOSED! The person who is "It" will then return to place in line and chorister says "Heads Up." Everyone raises their heads and the person whose thumb was chosen has to guess which of the seven people is "It."
If it takes 1 guess, we sing a song once. Twice, we sing it twice. 3 or more guesses means we sing the song 3 times (if you sing it multiple times, sing it with variation like girls only or singing softly or slowly so they don't get too bored - The person who did the
guessing gets to choose how we sing the song each time.) After singing, choose one more person to join the kids at the front and then choose 1 from all seven at front to be "It." Repeat.
Hope that makes sense. Our kids had fun. The hardest part with the junior primary was that the person who would get chosen kept opening their eyes right away, so the "It" person often had to choose several people before getting to one who kept their eyes closed!
