Brad Mehldau (piano)
Jazz pianist Brad Mehldau performs two solo concerts in Ireland this September. The acclaim for his latest release of a solo concert, Live in Marciac (Nonesuch) evidences an artist at the peak of his powers.
Mehldau's remarkable career has continued apace in recent years. He is the first jazz artist to hold the Richard and Debs Composers Chair at Carnegie Hall. He is also curator of an annual four-concert jazz series at London's prestigious Wigmore Hall. And he has recently released the acclaimed orchestral album Highway Rider to universal acclaim.
Prodigiously gifted and endlessly inventive, Brad Mehldau came to international attention with his acclaimed series of records entitled The Art of The Trio for Warner Bros. After ten rewarding years of acclaimed touring and recording with Rossy playing in Mehldau's regular trio, drummer Jeff Ballard joined the band in 2005. This new trio made its first for Nonesuch album, Day is Done in 2005 and most recently the stunning double live recording Brad Mehldau Trio: Live. Alongside his solo and trio work, Mehldau has worked with the great musicians in jazz and beyond. he has recently released two albums with Pat Metheny, he has enjoyed a rewarding gig in Joshua Redman's band, written and recorded classical songs with soprano star Renee Fleming and more recently Anne Sofie von Otter. Mehldau has also provided music for the films Million Dollar Hotel and Eyes Wide Shut. Ever the visionary, Mehldau's artistry continues to astound.
Mehldau's musical personality forms a dichotomy. He is first and foremost an improviser, and greatly cherishes the surprise and wonder that can occur from a spontaneous musical idea that is expressed directly, in real time. But he also has a deep fascination for the formal architecture of music, and it informs everything he plays. In his most inspired playing, the actual structure of his musical thought serves as an expressive device. As he plays, he listens to how ideas unwind, and the order in which they reveal themselves. Each tune has a strongly felt narrative arch, whether it expresses itself in a beginning, an end, or something left intentionally open-ended. The two sides of Mehldau's personalitythe improviser and the formalistplay off each other, and the effect is often something like controlled chaos. His performances convey a wide range of expression. There is often an intellectual rigor to the continuous process of abstraction that may take place on a given tune,
and a certain density of information. That could be followed by a stripped down, emotionally direct ballad. Mehldau favors juxtaposing extremes. He has attracted a sizeable following over the years, one that has grown to expect a singular, intense experience in his performance.
"Mehldau's awesome ability to keep several ideas on the go simultaneously is among the features of this phenomenal solo piano concert he gave at the Marciac Jazz Festival in 2006. A joy at every level and another contender for the year's best", Ray Comiskey, The Irish Times on Brad Mehldau, Live in Marciac (Nonesuch)
